BIOGRAPHY

Canadian mezzo-soprano Meagan Reimer holds a Bachelor of Music from Canadian Mennonite University and a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Performance from the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba. Coming from the Mennonite choral heritage and tradition, she began singing at home and grew within a musically rich community before pursuing formal study. She has performed in Manitoba with such ensembles as Camerata Nova, The Professor Bach Project, The Winnipeg Soloists Choir, The Mennonite Festival Chorus, The Winnipeg Singers, and Manitoba Underground Opera.

Meagan has been a regularly featured oratorio soloist in such works as The Requiem (Duruflé) and Requiem in D minor (Fauré) in Winnipeg, a host of cantatas of J.S. Bach (Winnipeg Bach Soloists), and in Allegri’s Miserere (St. Paul’s Bloor Street Choir, Toronto), Händel’s Coronation Anthems, Mozart’s Vespera sollennes de Confessore (Creemore Choral Festival Singers, Creemore, ON), Händel’s Messiah (Windsor Symphony Orchestra) and Saint-Saëns Oratorio de Noël and Pergolesi/Durante's Magnificat (York University and the Talisker Players, Toronto, ON).

Previously active in the Toronto “Indie Opera” scene, Meagan has performed extensively as a featured artist with Voicebox: Opera in Concert, Toronto Operetta Theatre, Opera by Request, TrypTych Concert and Opera, Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, Confidential Opera, Three Seven Ace Opera Company, Premiere Productions Ottawa, Opera Sustenida, and Opera Revue. She appeared as JULIA/JULES in a workshop production of Pomegranate, a new opera developed in conjunction with the Dora Award-winning Tapestry Opera. Further opera credits include DESDEMONA (Rossini's Otello), ROSINA (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), SESTO (Giulio Cesare), CHERUBINO (Le Nozze di Figaro), MERCÉDÈS (Carmen), RUGGIERO and BRADAMANTE (Alcina), KATE (The Pirates of Penzance), LAY SISTER/TOURIÈRE (Suor Angelica), BERTARIDO and UNULFO (Rodelinda), INO (Semele), and MASHA (The Seagull).

Meagan was a semi-finalist for the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg’s prestigious Doris McLellan Competition and a finalist of the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra Clifford Poole Vocal Competition in Toronto in 2018. Meagan was heard in recital at the Knutson Studio in Berlin, Germany along with fellow Mid-western Canadian, Pianist and Professor of Operatic Studies at the Hanns Eisler Conservatory, Byron Knutson, presenting favourites of the French and Canadian art song repertoire.

In February of 2020, she made her role debut as DONNA ELVIRA for a co-production of Don Giovanni with Theater Rudolstadt and Lyric Opera Studio Weimar in Saalfeld, Germany under the baton of Maestro Oliver Weder. That same year, she was invited to participate in the Oper im Berg Festival Grandi Voci Competition in Salzburg, Austria. She was scheduled to return to Lyric Opera Studio Weimar in 2020 as ANGELINA in Rossini's La Cenerentola, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the production was cancelled.

Now based in Manitoba, she has been a regular performer with Manitoba Underground Opera and Flipside Opera. She continues to return to Toronto for collaborative projects. Of note was her performance as DESDEMONA in Rossini's rarely performed Otello with Opera by Request where her performance "impressed as Desdemona" (John Gilks, Opera Ramblings), and garnered accolades: "Meagan Reimer was very good in the last act of the role of Desdemona, especially the Willow Song, reminding me of Joan Sutherland in her secure pitch and focus, and precisely accurate coloratura." (Leslie Barcza, Barcza Blog). She continues collaborative projects in southern Manitoba, mixing classical and opera staples with art song and jazz.

"Mezzo Meagan Reimer impressed as Desdemona too.  It’s a big, tricky role written for Isabella Colbran and it has a lovely version of the Willow Song which came off well here." - John Gilks, Opera Ramblings
